Erbilou: I take responsibility for the “tragedy” of Al-Basiti and this is the Vinicius I want

Alvaro Arbeloa, the newly appointed coach of Real Madrid, has openly acknowledged his accountability for the team’s surprising defeat against Albacete in the Copa del Rey, while simultaneously praising the performance of his star player, Vinicius Junior.

Following the departure of Xabi Alonso, who recently faced a loss in the final of the Spanish Super Cup against rivals Barcelona, Real Madrid entrusted Arbeloa with the managerial position. However, Arbeloa’s debut did not commence favorably, as the team succumbed to a 2-3 loss against Albacete on Wednesday evening, resulting in their elimination from the round of 16 of the cup.

In the post-match press conference, Arbeloa remarked, “In this club, a draw is always considered a poor result, indeed a tragedy; how much worse is a defeat in this manner? It becomes particularly challenging when it occurs against a competitor from a lower division.”

He continued, “If anyone should bear the responsibility, it is I, as I am the one making the decisions regarding the lineup, the style of play, and the substitutions. I can only extend my gratitude to the players for the warm welcome they have given me and for their efforts, and we will strive to get them back to peak physical and mental condition.”

Arbeloa emphasized his conviction regarding the chosen lineup, stating, “I was completely convinced that the selected squad was appropriate, and the players I sent onto the field and those on the bench were strong. I possess a talented group of players, and it is not easy for them, in just one day with a new coach, to implement everything I have asked of them. Therefore, I take full responsibility.”

Focus on Recovery and Improvement

The coach further noted, “The most important thing now is to begin working and to help the players recover. We have many who need to return to their best physical form, and we must prepare for the match on Saturday.”

When questioned about whether the loss to Albacete should be deemed a failure, Arbeloa responded, “I do not fear failure. I understand those who wish to label this defeat as a failure. Failure is part of the journey to success, and for me, they do not run in opposing directions. This experience will make me better. We have much to develop, but I am not afraid of failure; I have experienced numerous failures in my life and endured more painful cup eliminations than this one. Nonetheless, I return tomorrow with enthusiasm to Valdebebas to work with my players.”

Addressing Vinicius’s performance, Arbeloa commented, “For me, it was positive that he decided to show up and play all the minutes despite the significant effort he exerted last week. His readiness to play and assist the team, to take on defenders and not hide, is the Vinicius I want to see.”

Concluding his statements regarding the Brazilian star, he stated, “There will be days of greater brilliance and others less so, but this is the Vinicius I want, the leader. Soon, he will provide us with wonderful nights, and if Real Madrid wishes to win titles, they need the best version of Vinicius.”
