Alonso in Flick’s Mirror: Perez’s Guillotine Does Not Acknowledge Numbers

The recent dismissal of Xabi Alonso from his position as head coach of Real Madrid is not an unforeseen move in the context of the club’s history, particularly under the leadership of President Florentino Pérez. Known for his propensity to remove coaches regardless of conventional success metrics, Pérez’s decisions are often driven solely by his vision for the club’s future. The performance of the team under Alonso’s guidance since the beginning of the current season serves as a testament to this approach.

After a mere 34 matches at the helm, Alonso’s tenure culminated in a disappointing loss to Barcelona with a score of 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup. Following this defeat, Pérez opted to terminate Alonso’s contract and appointed his former teammate from both Real Madrid and Liverpool, Álvaro Arbeloa, as the new head coach.
