The Algerian Football Federation is poised to lodge a formal complaint with both the FIFA and the Caf, protesting what it deems to be poor officiating following the national team’s defeat to Nigeria, with a score of 2-0, on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025).
According to reports from Algerian media, the complaint will include detailed objections to several contentious decisions made by the Senegalese referee Issa Sy. Among the grievances is the refusal to award a penalty, as well as other decisions that were considered dubious and significantly influenced the course of the match, with accusations of bias toward the Nigerian team.
Additionally, the complaint will highlight that the referee did not shake hands with the Algerian players after the final whistle, a behavior that provoked widespread discontent within the Algerian delegation. There are also allegations against Nigerian players for provoking their opponents.
The Algerian Federation intends to address what it describes as “assaults against Algerian journalists and media personnel in the tunnel exiting the stadium.”
Based on these points, Algeria plans to demand the immediate suspension of referee Issa Sy, seeking to prevent him from officiating any further matches in the tournament.
